 Val Gilman is a sculptor and potter living in Shutesbury, She loves to work with students at any level from beginning to professional, and has an easy comfortable approach to helping each person move to their next step.

"I was lucky enough to go to an elementary school which taught pottery in art class. Ms. Melonis would have us spend about a month hand building items, glazing and then taking them home to show off to our family. For me, it was the highlight of the school year, and after becoming an adult, I always wanted to get back to it. But it took years before I finally had the courage to sign up for a pottery class where I found my way back to clay, and the joy of working on a wheel.  I have apprenticed for three potters, and have been teaching classes for over a year, now working at Northampton Pottery.  I enjoy working with porcelain and stoneware, creating functional items for every day use.  I love teaching people about clay and what you can create with it while striving to push my students out of their comfort zones to expand on their creativity."

Helen has been teaching since January 2019 and is an integral part of Northampton Pottery!

“I have always had an interest in art and took drawing, painting and 3D courses from childhood through undergrad at the University of Vermont. My first time throwing on the wheel was at the UVM Pottery Coop, where I learned the basics of creating different forms. After taking a hiatus for a few years I started taking classes at Noho Pottery in 2020 and quickly got sucked right back in. It began as an escape from my apartment during the pandemic but I soon realized how much I enjoyed spending time in the studio. When I began interning it gave me exposure to all the effort that goes into running a studio. From learning how to recycle clay, to mixing glazes and firing the kilns, I gained an appreciation for the entire process of producing pottery for myself and others. I enjoy throwing functional pieces with the goal of creating bowls, plates, and mugs that are the first thing you reach for in your cabinet. One day I hope to open my own studio and continue showing others the joy of working with clay!”

Patrick began teaching at Northampton Pottery in 2022 with a focus on helping beginners develop their technique on the wheel. You will see him running around the studio during the week but he’s also available to teach date nights, private instruction and group events.
